"We have a very strong internal belief that the internet is the key to successful business," says Bengt Norin, the Swedish Post, the operator of the country's national postal system, vice-president of corporate business development and the leader of the extranet project. "I was given a very free hand to develop the Torget site, both in terms of resources and personnel, and in terms of making a decision on software." "Most people provide resources to create the solution and then forget about resources to maintain the system," says Norin. There are 55 people managing the Torget website and eight running the intranet. "You need quite a large group of people to maintain the thing. What I mean by 'maintain' is making sure that the information is accurate and current. We update the external service four times a day and the internal twice a day. And that's a lot of work." Cite from the second above mentioned page: "We realized several years ago that electronic communication would eventually pose a significant threat to our traditional business," said Norin. "On the other hand, we also saw that it presented a potentially huge business opportunity and so began investing in developing electronic commerce and e-mail for our business partners." |
